!!!PERCEPTION!!!

Updated: Nov 6, 2018

Perception.

Perception. How you see something or someone is your choice, your perception. No one tells you who to be or what to see. But there are a variety of factors that influence your perception. They can be positive; on a cloudy day, you’ll see the rainbows, in the dark, you’ll see the light; or negative; on a cloudy day you’ll see the storm and in the dark, all you see is shadows. In people, you can see the beauty we all hold in our hearts or the stereotypes dropped upon us.

Social perception is when you form impressions and judgments about the people around you. It is when you generate opinions about others based on your first impressions of them and the feelings you get when you are with them. Your social perception is created by your mind but also by the people around you, everyone has their own unique social perception so what you see may not be the same as others and social perception is a great way to infer and suggest what people are like but it can also be extremely stereotypical and bias.

Your social perception is created by you and those around you. You look at people and instantly form judgments based on their appearance; what do they wear, are they good-looking? You can also make judgments based on their verbal and non-verbal communication; do they have and accent or different dialect and what is their body language and expressions. However, what if these people know you are perceiving them and have the ability to alter your perception?

Your social perception is completely unique to you. Many people can have similar perceptions, but no one has exactly the same. Have you had a conversation with a group of people and left saying that someone was really rude whereas your friend said that the same person was really kind? This is called the Rashomon effect, where multiple people at the same event can have diverse perceptions. The Rashomon effect displays how even if you think that something is obvious, clear and simple, your perceptions are speckled with your memories, expectations and experiences therefore others may not think the same. If this is so, how can we find the truth?

Social perception isn't just your perspective of someone; it is your belief of who they are at a first glance. So, your perception can't be all that accurate. Just because someone’s wearing the latest clothes doesn’t mean they are wealthy, just because someone’s upset doesn’t mean they’re a grumpy person. Our mind makes these cruel assumptions about people due to the stereotypes that live in our society and in our minds. We also create these ideas based on nationality, prejudice and personal biases. So, is your perception a first glance at those around you, or a first glance at yourself?

Social perception is when you form impressions and judgments about the people around you. You determine estimations on their personality and attitude from their appearance and mannerisms. These estimates, these perceptions, are yours and can be extremely different from other people’s and can be true and honest or cruel and inaccurate.

Perception, you see love, I see pain, I see beauty, you see vain.

Perception.

Always xxo
